Back to School with Braces: Tips for a Smooth Transition

As summer winds down and the back-to-school season approaches, many students are gearing up for a return to the classroom. For those with braces, heading back to school can bring its own set of challenges.

Whether you're a seasoned brace-wearer or just starting your orthodontic journey, here are some tips to help make the transition as smooth as possible:

  1. Stock Up on Supplies:
    Before the first day of school, make sure you have all the necessary supplies to keep your braces clean and comfortable. Stock up on orthodontic wax, floss threaders, and interdental brushes to help maintain good oral hygiene throughout the day.
  2. Pack a Braces-Friendly Lunch:
    Packing a lunch if you have braces can help you avoid breakage and keep your orthodontic treatment on track. Opt for soft foods like yogurt, soft fruits, cooked veggies, and pasta, and steer clear of crunchy or sticky snacks that could damage your braces.
  3. Keep an "Emergency" Kit:
    Things happen, especially when you're wearing braces. While there are truly very few emergencies when you have orthodontic treatment, you can be prepared for any mishaps by keeping an ortho-care kit in your backpack or locker. Include dental wax and orthodontic elastics to help address any unexpected issues. A proxy brush can be helpful for any food that gets stuck in your brackets. Our office can give you all of these items! Invisalign patients may need an extra case just for the lunchbox so as not to accidentally toss out those aligners into the trash!
  4. Practice Proper Oral Hygiene:
    With braces or Invisalign aligners, maintaining good oral hygiene is more important than ever. Make sure to brush your teeth after every meal and floss at least once a day to prevent food particles from getting stuck in your braces. Consider carrying a travel-sized toothbrush and toothpaste with you to school for quick touch-ups throughout the day. If you cannot brush, do try to at least swish with water to clear your braces of any food debris. If you have Invisalign, this is also recommended!
  5. Stay Hydrated:
    Drinking plenty of water is crucial for your overall health and can also help remove stuck food in your teeth caused by braces. Keep a water bottle with you at school and take frequent sips throughout the day to stay hydrated and keep your mouth feeling fresh.
  6. Be Prepared for Adjustments:
    As you progress through your orthodontic treatment, you'll likely need periodic adjustments to your braces. Be prepared for any discomfort or changes in your eating habits that may occur after an adjustment appointment. Stick to soft foods for the first few days and avoid hard or chewy foods that could cause pain or damage to your braces. We promise any discomfort is temporary!
  7. Communicate with Your Teachers:
    If you're experiencing any discomfort or difficulty with your braces at school, don't hesitate to communicate with your teachers or school nurse. They can help accommodate your needs and provide assistance if necessary.
  8. Stay Positive:
